Alaska Ferry Terminal

In 2008 Alaska expressed an interest in purchasing the City-owned Alaska state ferry terminal for $7.5 million, due to concerns about the city’s ability to maintain it. Do you think that the city should continue to own the facility or should enter into negotiations to sell it?

Tha Alaska Ferry Terminal needs to provide, employment for the people of our community, profit, a contribution to city coffers. If it fails in any of these things, it not a business our corporation should be interested in keeping. Sell it!!! If there are compelling reasons to keep it, make that information public.

It is my understanding that the Alaska government changed their mind on buying it however I think it is worth trying again provided we could get assurances that they would maintain it. This could possibly add to our tax roll (although I’m not sure what they are paying in terms of a lease agreement), and would certainly decrease our cost in terms of maintaining it. If we can get them to take it off of our hands and come out ahead I am in favour of pursuing this.
