Brian Johnson
Brian submitted the following:
I have lived in Prince Rupert all 52 years of my life. Time does fly! I attended kindergarden at the Friendship house then moved to Westview School for grades 1 to 7. I spent grade 8 at Booth memorial then attended PRSS until graduating in 1979.
The landscape of education has definitely changed!!!!
My 3 children attended school here in Rupert and all were successful in graduating!
I currently work for the City of Prince Rupert at the Jim Ciccone Recreation Centre.
My work experience includes public and industrial accounting, grain inspection (including assistant manager of a small pellet plant), municipal work and fishing….
I have been active in our community since the early 80′s.
My labour union involvement includes…..
2 years with the Fishermans Co-op shoreworkers union- Treasurer
5 years with PSAC grain division- Vice President
10 years CUPE municipal- Executive included positions of Chief Shop Steward and President…. currently active on committees.
4 years with the Prince Rupert District Labour Council
2 years CUPE B.C. division as a committee member.
My community based involvement includes…
4 years on the Performing Arts Centre board of Directors.
4 years as Director of the Unemployment Action Centre Society.
7 years as Director with the Prince Rupert Community Enrichment Society…. Presently hold the position of Treasurer.
3 years as committee member to the HRSDC committee…our committee has had the task of making recommendations in distributing over $500,000 of Federal dollars to organizations who work in the areas of poverty and homeless citizens. I remain active with this committee.
Local Politics
I was elected as your Trustee for two terms and held office from 2003-2008.
My past had me involved at various levels with the NDP North Coast Constituency.
Volunteerism
I’ve coached youth in the areas of softball, bowling and Track and Field.
The greatest success in this area is the Track and Field teams which I worked to build in 2009 and 2010!! I developed a program that assisted athletes in achieving their goals on and off the Track and Field. We called it the Honour Role where athletes had to maintain 4 A’s to compete with us. The areas of focus were Academics, Attendance, Achievement and Ambassadorship. We had 147 registered athletes who were successful on and off the field. We also had the largest Track and Field teams in Rupert’s history. 3 Zone banners and no longer ranked last in the Province! Our success would not have materialized had we not had the support of Teachers, Support Staff, High School administration plus parents and our high school students. Everyone was part of this successful team!
It takes everyone in our community to make our children successful.
I bring to the table a “Team Building” approach.
We need to work cooperatively with our First Nations and other ethnic groups to best deliver education to all of our youth.
We need to work to create the best learning environment for our students and staff.
We need to work with our MLA to best address issues created by the Provincial Government.
We need to utilize Westview and Kanata Schools….. I do have ideas on this issue and I’m always open to all other suggestions that are out in the community.
We need to listen to all concerns in our district and coordinate a larger voice to best deal with the systemic issues which were created by Governments in power.
I am approachable. I will listen.
I want to be part of Prince Rupert’s winning team of citizens, teachers, support workers and administration to create the best learning environment for all!
We have to work “smart” to best address the challenges in front of us.
I thank you for your time in reading my Candidates profile for the position of School Trustee.
I ask for your support on election day!
