Joy Thorkelson
Joy submitted the following:
I arrived in Prince Rupert in 1974. I am married and we have two sons. I have spent my working career representing those employed in the fishing industry – my passion is to have a sustainable commercial fishing industry that brings wealth to our community with decent incomes for fishermen and plant workers.
I have served two terms on City Council. My focus as a Councillor is the relief of poverty and solutions to social problems associated with poverty and, of course, increased employment opportunities. I work for environmentally responsible growth and for jobs for local people. Improved social programs and fostering better relationships with our neighbouring First Nations’ communities and involving First Nations residents in civic activities and committees are issues important to me as well.
My City Council Committee activities include serving on the Prince Rupert Library Board and Co-chair of the City’s Green Task Force II. I also volunteer as the Secretary-Treasurer for the Prince Rupert Unemployed Centre Society, an organization that for no charge, assists the financially disadvantaged to access government services.
I am a social and environmental activist; I have a long and proud record of standing up for a clean environment and fair social and economic systems.
I work to bring a fair and thoughtful view to Council matters, to listen well to others, and to find common sense solutions. My record shows that I am well researched and that I bring depth and balance to City Council.
