City Council

School Trustees

  • Dwhite

A question for the people running for trustee.  While not everything was
negative, I think it fair to say that the past six years have been
dominated by declining enrollment, funding/budget cuts, school closures,
and several changes in administration at the board office.  Assuming
that most of that is behind us, what do you envision as the most
important goal/project that you will be working towards that will result
in a more positive, less divisive outcome?

  • Mbowles

The school board must take on responsibility to make sure money, time and energy is not tied up in an endless number of grievances and arbitrations.  We can solve our own problems.  We do not need to spend money that would best be suited to relieving classroom size/composition issues on outside consultants.

I would like to know how the current council, the mayor and the economic
development officer didn’t know about the Shell LNG plant that Shell
was looking at putting in Prince Rupert, after all it was in the
Vancouver Sun and hackingthemainframe in late Spring, did they even
contact Shell about it? or were they too busy sending letters to 25
    retailers?

  • Mbowles

After living in Prince Rupert for 34 years, I have seen this town at a high point and now at the low point.  Over all that time City Council has counted on, “The next big thing,” to pull us back up.  This has led us to cyclical development that has clearly not sustained us over the long run.  Do any of the City candidates have anything innovative or progressive that will allow sustainable, long term growth in our community?

  • Mbowles

A question for anyone running for City Council or Mayor.  The North Pacific Cannery gets by on a shoe string budget with support from our local communities.  In spite of a difficult summer the Cannery continued to bring people to our community.  Is there a way to better Prince Rupert City can support this important tourist attraction?

I totally agree with you Marty, if the issues can be resolved in house and save money and be allocated where it is truely needed we can kill two birds with one stone. Logical thinking!

I believe that we need to come together as a community and focus on what is needed to make Prince Rupert more attractive, viable and prosperous. Unfortunately we may never get back to how things used to be but, we can focus on our future and build our city back up. We need to work together, buy locally, hire locally, train locally. This will help in keeping businesses open. This will help decrease our horrific unemployment rate. Bottom line is, we need to work collaboratively and collectively and appreciate what we have and don’t have. The direction we are going in now with the new economic developments sounds very appealing and I am feeling very optimistic about our future. Great question!

I would be interested in hearing from people who were in attendance at the school trustees forum on Wednesday night.  I was there, and in my opinion there was some clear winners and losers.  I was glad to see questions on class size and composition (which is the focus of some serious problems in this district).  There were also some clear positions taken on the allocation of funds between the classrooms and administration.

My sense was that some of the incumbents hurt their cause, while some of the challengers helped their cause.

    What do others think?

Did my questions make it to you, Editor? There was no confirmation or denial to my email.
    Appreciate your response.

There needs to be a focus on rebuilding working relationships between the various stakeholders so we can work as a team toward addressing the issues facing our schools such as classroom size and composition, student readiness, etc.  It is important the board of trustees take a lead in this process through a committment to transparency, honesty and respect in all of their dealings.  The need for accurate information around classroom size and composition needs to be established and clearly stated.  I am concerned about the vast differences between the school superintendant’s report and what I am seeing as a parent as well as hearing from teachers.  We need to start being clear about the issues so we can have meaningful discussions focused on mitigating them as best we can as well as advocating for the necessary changes at the provincial and national levels.
Our greatest resource is having a strong team comprised of representatives from all the various stakeholders working toward common goals.  When this is restored, we will be more effective in addressing the complex issues facing our schools.

School Trustee Candidates attendance during this election process…
A school trustee needs to be knowledgable of their commuunity and future leaders.
Louisa, Marty and I were at these public forums……
We were the only trustee candidates at the UNBC forum to hear challenges the students were facing.
I would like to thank the student union for holding this forum.
The knowledge I attained will assist me in future years to come!

    Committing to organization
I have heard at many levels in our community that an Administrator that was being advised by a consultant to perform her duties, has found other employment outside our district. While it is nice to see an idividual excel in life……It cost our district and children dearly! I’m shocked!
